James Howell

James Howell

James Howell was born at Cefn Bryn in 1594. When he was seven his father was moved to Abernant and Cynwil Caio in Carmarthenshire. James never lost touch with Llangammarch.

He travelled widely and names Ben Johnson amongst his friends. He had a gift for languages which brought the post of secretary to the King. However he was suspected of being a spy and spent time in the Fleet prison.

His writing formed the cornerstone of his livelihood and wrote over 50 books. He was friends with John penry though they had divergent political views.

His memorial is in Middle Temple Church, London.
