19825 ALFRED CAMPION, 2nd BATTALION, WELSH REGIMENT

Alfred was born in 1879 (baptised in April) in Bridgend, Llangammarch Wells, to James and Mary Anne (née Prosser) Campion. James, a Railway Platelayer, was originally from Northamptonshire and Mary Anne was from Builth. The 1871 census shows that the growing family had lived in Llandovery and Carmarthen before moving to Llangammarch. By the time Alfred was born, the couple already had 4 daughters. Alfred went to school in Llangammarch and by 1891, when he was 12, his mother had died and he was living at Tavarnpridd with his father and older sister Clara. In 1901, he was working on William and Elizabeth Probert's farm in Merthyr Cynog. When Alfred was about 27, he married Margaret, a Liverpool lass, and they set up home in Bargoed. His occupation was given on the 1911 census as Colliery Haulier Underground. Alfred enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Welsh Regiment. He died on 26 July 1916, aged 38, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France, the Bargoed and Gilfach War Memorial and the War Memorial in St Cadmarch's Church, Llangammarch Wells.

Killed in Action. The sad news has reached Mr Campion, of this place, that his son Alfred was killed in action in France on July 10th.
